Accelerating Content Delivery Across the Globe
Launched in 1987, Travel Channel is the world's leading travel media brand, delivering stories of human journeys and travel destinations to nearly 130 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific. As part of the Scripps Networks Interactive family, Travel Channel shares a vast amount of content with its audiences on a daily basis, generating approximately 500 hours of content per year.
Originally using an FTP application to transfer all digital content Travel Channel realized several issues pointing to a need for a better file transfer solution for its workflows. One critical challenge associated with the FTP tool was the slow data transfer rates achieved while moving digital content. File transfers were lengthy, taking many hours for Travel Channel to deliver video files. Also problematic with the FTP tool were the often incomplete or corrupted files that were delivered. Lastly, the FTP application used did not allow for proper asset management of Travel Channel’s media files making it difficult to keep track of which files had been delivered successfully and which had failed.
With the assistance of FileCatalyst partner Playbox Technology FileCatalyst Direct along with the FileCatalyst HotFolder client application was integrated into Travel Channels existing media asset management tool. From installation to configuration, the process was quick and simple. PlayBox Technology Broadcast Systems Sales & Technical Director, Ananth Sam commented “It’s been a great experience for us to work closely with the Filecatalyst team. Starting from 45 Mbps growing up to a 622 Mbps bandwidth license Filecatalyst was a perfect solution for Travel Channel’s file based content delivery workflow.”
The deployment of FileCatalyst Direct and FileCatalyst HotFolder allowed for improved and simplified workflow processes at Travel Channel. An immediate improvement was noticed in data transfer rates, as Matthew Westrup, Head of Operations at Scripps Networks Interactive noted, “FileCatalyst sinks its teeth into the line to ensure the file gets to where it needs to go on time. Instead of taking days to receive a file, we could have it within the hour, or even within minutes.” Also saving time was FileCatalyst Direct’s progressive feature allowing Travel Channel to start sending the content of the file as it was being written to disk. Corrupt and incomplete transfers also became a thing of the past at Travel Channel, with FileCatalyst’s acceleration technology ensuring reliable and complete deliveries for each transfer. Lastly, the deployment of the FileCatalyst HotFolder provided features for proper management of Travel Channel’s media assets, along with reporting of all transfers for tracking purposes. Bandwidth usage could also be controlled within the FileCatalyst Direct solution, to ensure Travel Channel’s finite bandwidth was optimized when delivering digital content.
